Enrique Iglesias – Sexy Effort From Insomniac

by Bambi Weavil

Impossible not to address (or want to undress): Enrique Iglesias (MySpace, Facebook, Twitter) looks incredibly sexy and yummy in black and white on his CD cover with the hodge-podge pink and blue club-like font for his title, Insomniac. Enrique has a charming voice that is recognizable to anyone who has been listening to pop music for the last five years. Enrique has pretty much been categorized as the pop star heartbreaker who wants to be your “hero” and flirt with your sexuality as much as you want to be seduced with his.

Enrique has spent three years working on Insomniac and this album is a interesting mix of club pop, a R&B chance and Latin-flavored drive-home music. This is not a bad market to attempt to court, and Enrique does a pretty-good job at doing so with this effort.  However, there were some tracks I would have pushed onto other albums to give this album more of a balance, such as “Little Girl,” “Sweet Isabel” and “Wish I Were Your Lover.”

“Wish I Was Your Lover” wasn’t a horrible track, but it blends in with the other tracks around it that are so similar that it really lost it’s impact on me. There are certain moments during the album where a energy drink or a cup of coffee helps.

“Ring My Bells” was a risky way to kick-off the album but with it’s trance-like addictive repetition, it’s catchy. The album goes into “Push,” a special collaboration with Lil Wayne, and I was in a complete shock that he went in this direction. This is the latest trail to blaze down in the Pop world that has paid off for most artists, so it’s understandable that Enrique would give it a shot. It works well with Enrique’s voice, but it’s inevitable to compare him to Justin Timberlake who has practically made the Hip Hop/Pop/Techno and Hot Factor hybrids his trademark. This song, more or less, has already happened on radio already, however I think a club remix will really propel Enrique to the top of the charts. By the time you get through this song, you’re wondering if this is the same guy who wanted “me” to have him as my “Hero.”

“Do You Know?” was more of the sound I was expecting on the album that I really enjoyed and another possibility of a incredible remix. This song defines Enrique’s surge of love and sexiness that he’s famous for. “Somebody’s Me” should be a single and most certainly a sweet VH1 video. “Tired of Being Sexy” and “Miss You” flow into each other nicely and “Miss You” is a nice revisit of his musical roots and is just simply good.

“On Top of You” is a very interesting and so incredibly sexual song, that I long to hear it as a Thievery Corp tribal remix. There is so much sex on this album that I would keep this song over “Ring My Bells.” I’m curious to see how Enrique plans to perform this song, it seems pretty fitting on a Madonna-type bed performance.

Enrique’s voice is always so charming and gorgeous, sometimes I find him enchanting and sometimes I’m feeling like he put too many of the same type of love songs with very similar styles on the album. This is a good effort, but this is one of those albums that you would best be served to download your favorite tracks on ITunes.
