Common Market album cover
Common Market

This is the best underground hip hop group I’ve heard in years and yet another happy accident by MySpace surfing. Common Market are RA Scion and DJ/Producer Sabzi, and are based in Seattle. Fourteen tracks plus one bonus, this progressive music keeps the beats and lyrics groundbreaking with a activist edge. This is music that urges you to act and love first with lyrics like, “How can we be leaders if the rest are lost?” There is passionate delivery in their music often fused with soul and jazz, reflections of their Bahá’í Faith and their dedication of delivering the message of serving all people, spreading love, encouraging building character, spreading hope and encouraging change and uniting in the world in a positive direction. Common Market is awake and aware that there “is a whole lot happening.”

“Re-Fresh” is just one example of keeping perspective on being a leader and representative on focusing on the positive and living life and taking a deep breath. “Push” focuses on the pressure of life and conforming and encourages to push back and be yourself. “G’Dang Diggy” is a great commentary of valuing friendships and relationships without losing who you are in the process. “Connect For” is one of my favorite tracks and encourages connecting and taking care of each other with lyrics like “it’s time for all of us to build.” “Every Last One” is extremely memorable, and points to the power to the people and could easily be the ode to activism and global tapestry. This album is one you should not pass up if you are wanting to explore some incredible indy hip hop with activism flavor.
