Fascinating Queers: Queen Camille’s Sexual Persona

Fascinating Queers: Queen Camille’s Sexual Persona

In Lorette C. Luzajic’s new series, Fascinating Queers, Lorette writes a interesting perspective on Camille Paglia. Here is an excerpt:

It’s true that Camille’s work can put our knickers in a knot: she’d recede into the boring backwater of academia if her spunky words weren’t so confrontational. Though she’s practically a senior citizen, she writes about sex from every angle whenever she can. But her first major appearance was the unparalleled 700-page tome Sexual Personae, a fascinating read that spanned the entirety of Western art and literature, the history of humanity against nature. Clearly, she has read every single work of English literature ever written, and studied thoroughly every piece of art.

FEMINA POTENS VISUAL ART OPENING RECEPTION: Bust ED

SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA – SEPTEMBER 14, 2008 – Femina Potens presents “Bust ED” artwork around breast cancer awareness and breast health. Please allow us to tease, tantalize, and captivate you with our dirty pillows. “Bust ED” celebrates the lovely and erotic nature of the bosom, while reminding everyone of the way breast cancer affects our lives. 2.4 million women living in the U.S. have been diagnosed with and treated for breast cancer. An estimated 182,480 new cases of invasive breast cancer are expected to be diagnosed in American women during 2008 (ACS 2008). Artists Annie Sprinkle, Elizabeth Stevens, Madison Young, Jennifer Clary, Laura Drugal, Mary Ellen Scherel, and Talia Green all address this prevalent issue with their art. Join us to pay tribute to the mighty and healthy breast for the “Bust ED” opening reception October 9, 2008 at 7pm – 10pm. During the reception we will be hosting a live body casting of breast cancer survivors, a “Mamorial”, for artist Mary Ellen Scherl. Show runs October 9 through October 26, 2008.

A Powerful Noise: The Most Important Film You Will See This Year

A Powerful Noise: The Most Important Film You Will See This Year

A Powerful Noise

Rarely do films make such a impact on me that I would consider classifying a documentary as “required viewing” – A Powerful Noise is one of my most favorite exceptions.

Shelia C. Johnson presents, A Powerful Noise, and the film is directed by Scott Thigpen and Tom Cappello. This amazing movie focuses on three women in different regions of the world, fighting and empowering others against the fight against AIDS while fighting it themselves, poverty, education and equal rights for women.

Executive Director of the Trevor Project, Charles Robbins, Discusses The “I’m Glad I Failed” Campaign

Executive Director of the Trevor Project, Charles Robbins, Discusses The “I’m Glad I Failed” Campaign

p align=”center”>Charles Robbins, Executive Director of The Trevor Project

Recently, we spoke with the Executive Director of The Trevor Project, Charles Robbins, about their recent advertising campaign, “I’m Glad I Failed”, The Trevor Project and National Suicide Prevention Week, which runs each year from September 7-13th:

I'm Glad I Failed

Bambi Weavil: How did the “I’m Glad I Failed” campaign come about?

Charles Robbins: We wanted to reach young people at a relatable level, and we believe this campaign does exactly that. It speaks to youth in an understandable yet highly compelling fashion, and encourages them to be accepting and supportive toward one another in order to avoid a tragic loss of life. It also creates awareness about The Trevor Helpline as a resource that LGBTQ youth can turn to when they need someone to listen and understand without judgment. There was a great deal of careful planning surrounding the “I’m Glad I Failed” campaign, including testing the artwork on youth focus groups. We found that young people responded to the campaign and learned something from it, which is extremely important.

On Sunday, September14th, thousands of people will
gather here in New York (at City Hall Park and at a footbridge in Albany) and (in
solidarity) at San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge, to march in support of marriage
equality for all New Yorkers. Since its inception 5 years ago in NYC, this annual march
across the Brooklyn Bridge has helped raise awareness about the continued lack of
access to the rights and responsibilities of civil marriage experienced by the state’s
same-sex couples. The march has grown into the largest pro-marriage equality rally in
the United States.
