Eighteen years ago, Talana Kreeger was brutally sexually assaulted and murdered in a vicious hate crime here. The painful memory of that tragic event has been held in silence in this Coastal community — until now.
Community members gathered into a packed sanctuary at St. Jude’s Metropolitan Community Church on Feb. 22 to remember and celebrate Kreeger’s life. They came to express the need to answer the questions of why Talana Kreeger was murdered and why the community had been silent about such a brutal and passionate crime of hate.

Message from Fight OUT Loud:
Mayor Jim Naugle of Fort Lauderdale has once again used his office to spread fear and hate about the gay community. In the latest city newsletter, paid for by the city and available on the city’s website, Naugle again used misinformation and bigotry to paint the LGBT community as predators and a danger.
In the official Mayor’s message, on the very first page of the newsletter, Naugle again makes the claim that gay men are making our parks and public places unsafe for children and that we need to be “curtailing these illegal activities in the future.” This echoes his continued attacks and claims that he wants to “stop an attempt by gays to take over Fort Lauderdale.”

“I want to be with you, but I don’t know how.” The DL Chronicles, a series regularly played on here!, focuses on the story from a African-American male perspective of being gay, kissing and not telling, but on the down low. Being on the down low involves being in the closet, sometimes among male peers and sometimes while in relationships with women. The first season focuses on four different stories in the African American community, and I view this first season as a teaser to something more developed. I believe in a second season, all these characters can be explored more in-depth and I think that is what the series needs.

This special two-disc collection providing the best of Ashford and Simpson from their Warner Bros. years in this brand new release proves to be timeless. For the long-time fans of Ashford and Simpson, disc one provides classic and impossible to find 12 inch remixes from 1973 - 1982. Disc two reinvents their classics from today’s hottest remixers including Tom Moulton and Dimitri From Paris. Ashford and Simpson’s four decades of contributions still continue in today’s popular music such as writing credits on Amy Winehouse’s album Back to Black, for the single, “Tears Dry On Their Own.”

Janet Jackson’s music is always considered somewhat autobiographical at conception, and no matter what her reasons are for singing her music, Discipline is one hot record. We were given a special sneak peak a few months ago for “Feedback” and we knew then that we had to brace ourselves, Janet was back and she’s not playin’. Janet brings everything that makes her music tight: the dance groove, the open, unapologetic sexuality and the tenderness when she opens her soul and sings.

There are few artists out there that I would want to risk my personal funds on, but if there was one that I would invest in, it would be Shannon Curtis. If the amount of times I’ve listened to her six-song album is any indication, she’s going to be someone I’m going to personally be talking about for a long time to come. She has completely charmed me into 100% endorsement. This is the contemporary pop/jazz artist I’ve been waiting for since Norah Jones and Vanessa Carlton.

This is the best underground hip hop group I’ve heard in years and yet another happy accident by MySpace surfing. Common Market are RA Scion and DJ/Producer Sabzi and are based in Seattle. Fourteen tracks plus one bonus, this progressive music keeps the beats and lyrics groundbreaking with a activist edge. This is music that urges you to act and love first with lyrics like, “How can we be leaders if the rest are lost?” There is passionate delivery in their music often fused with soul and jazz, reflections of their Bahá’í Faith and their dedication of delivering the message of serving all people, spreading love, encouraging building character, spreading hope and encouraging change and uniting in the world in a positive direction.
