Dianne Reeves, the Grammy award-winning premier jazz vocalist who is the only singer to win the vocal category for three consecutive recordings in any singing category, returns with a new album on April 15th on Blue Note Records, When You Know. Reeves mixes up this album with classic standards as well as new material and this is her first since performing the award-winning soundtrack to George Clooney’s 2005 film, Good Night, Good Luck.

In early 2002, unofficial estimates suggested as many as 8,000 homeless LGBTQ youth were on New York City streets. That number should blow minds and inspire change, as should the brand new book by Lucky Michaels called Shelter. Michaels worked since 2003 as a overnight counselor at Sylvia’s Place and is now the program director for the Marsha P. Johnson Center, a 24-hour drop in center for LGBT youth and young adults. Shelter is a very intimate story from the eyes of Michaels’ photography, his personal artistic passion, and the intimate stories as told by LGBTQ youth who have been or are homeless and have stayed at Sylvia’s Place. Sylvia’s Place is New York City’s emergency shelter for homeless LGBTQ youth. This book is a absolute must for everyone who is a member of the gay community and everyone who wants to address the homeless issues in New York City and beyond.

There is only one Dame Shirley Bassey: the world famous British siren who can still get the party started and then some. Dame Shirley Bassey has sold millions of records worldwide, and spent more weeks in the charts than any other British female recording artist. Now she has released her first album in over a decade on Decca Records, Get the Party Started, celebrates her 70th birthday and combines 13 brilliant songs in a combination of new records and remixed tracks. Don’t be fooled, there’s nothing dated about Dame Shirley Bassey, she is just as contemporary as ever.

Loud, savvy and traditionally nontraditional, The B-52s are back with their first record of the 21st century called Funplex, being released on March 25th. Pumping rock and dance with their trademark vocal interplay between Kate Pierson, Fred Scheider, Keith Strickland and Cindy Wilson is showcased all over this album. There isn’t any point in this album where the mood isn’t upbeat and fun.

Coming of age stories seem to have a certain backlight of secrecy within the narrator’s past or within their family, but I’ve never read anything that could quite compare to what Janine Avil went through in her childhood. Janine wrote a very compelling memoir on her life growing up in affluent Long Island with a family unit, devoted to secrecy and at the same time, fiercely to their children, as well as to the denial of disease that claimed more than one life.

Sylvia’s Place, in conjunction with Metropolitan Community Charities of New York Homeless Youth Services, a nonprofit social service organization located in New York’s Hell’s Kitchen and Harlem neighborhoods, is one of five emergency homeless shelters in the entire country dedicated to helping GLBTQ youth who are homeless and displaced.

Kylie’s dedication to the gay and dance music communities, which are not exclusive to one another, has been a long, satisfying relationship between Minogue and the gay audience. X is Minogue’s 10th studio album and is being released in the United States on April 1st on Capitol Records is highly anticipated among the gay community in particular. The one amazing aspect about this record, which will turn some people on or turn some people off - she rarely sounds the exact same on every song.

Possibly the most anticipated album in 2008 coming out is Duffy’s Rockferry. I started catching the buzz thanks to my friend Larry Flick’s praise on OutQ In The Morning on Sirius OutQ, and then I was able to get my hands on it as well and now I know why this is one hot release! The five songs are top quality and I have been listening to this one SAMPLER all day long. There’s something about this artist from Nefyn, Wales that should have the same buzz Amy Winehouse got when she came on the scene, except Duffy, has a hell of a lot more talent.
