Fat Girls starring, written and produced by the talented Ash Christian, almost like a young, gay Jack Black, put together a great high school comedy taking place in Texas, about the universal theme of growing up - trying to fit in among categories/roles/cliches, religion, sexuality and region. Christian’s character, Rodney, wants to be a Broadway star, get a hot gay boyfriend and please his mother a ultra-fundamentalist Christian, who is also trying to fit in within her religious circle. Rodney’s best friend, Sabrina (Ashley Fink) is overweight with two lesbian Moms and becomes involved with another outcast, Rudy (Robin de Jesus), who was a Cuba refugee and adopted by a African American family.

The “popular” and “cool” kids in school doesn’t except the three willingly, yet Rodney lands his dream date in Joey (Joe Flaton), handsome, popular and rebelious foriegn exchange student from England who comes across as constantly annoyed by everything throughout the movie. Everyone in this movie was casted appropriately and all the scenes you’d come to expect came across as completeably believable, especially Rodney’s first time in a gay bar and charmed by the Liza Minelli drag queen impersonator.

Using the metaphor of accepting your inner fat girl as a way to accept your sexuality was completely appropriate and allowed a lot of flexibility in all the storylines of all the main characters. No matter how people viewed Rodney, he always saw that “fat girl” that wasn’t good enough and could never believe that he’d get the boy he wanted. Something I also enjoyed was some of the one-liners throughout the movie from the fundamentalist Mom from her stereotyped, ridiculous and bigoted views of homosexuality.

I felt more pulled into the movie as I got more invested in the characters, and that’s the key to excellent writing. I hope Christian continues to create more films marketed to the gay community, because his talent of telling stories that connect with contemporary and timeless humor, while not depending or exploiting too many gay stereotypes was done like a flawless Broadway number by a true professional.  Be sure to pick up your copy of Fat Girls, out on DVD on February 12th!
