Wilmington, NC Protests Prop 8 In A National Day of Unity

One-hundred thirty people, both from the gay community and straight allies gathered together in a peaceful protest on a beautiful warm Saturday afternoon in Wilmington, NC at the Federal Building in solidarity with the national protesting of Prop 8 passing in California at 1:30p EST on November 15th. Local organizers Kati Heffield and Mary Eller helped spread the word via social networking sites like Facebook that Wilmington would be represented as part of the estimated 300 cities taking part in the national protest.
Most protesters held up signs including “equality for all” and “love will overcome,” as well as many others from gay and straight allies. Anyone was allowed to speak to the enthused group about why they were for gay equality, against Prop 8 and for gay marriage, and many did with passion and emotion, including Reverend Amanda McCullough from St. Jude’s MCC and One Tree Hill actress, Sophia Bush. Bush said that she worked hard campaigning for the Obama Campaign and felt it was important to her to change her voter registration from being a Californian to becoming a North Carolina registered voter. Bush has a personal connection to the gay community, because her Godfather was gay and Bush felt very passioniately about the cause and was disheartened that Prop 8 passed.
There was one protester against gay marriage who kept the peace standing on the opposite side of the street holding a cardboard sign that said “one woman + one man = marriage.”
There was a general sense of hope and optimism in the air, as well as excitement that Wilmington was taking part and letting their voice be heard against any ban against gay marriage even though gay marraige has not come up for vote in North Carolina.
