Guerilla Theatre presents “Romeo & Juliet” starring Katie Scofield and Quinn Kishpaugh

Guerilla Theatre, always at the forefront of avant garde and political theatre in the Port City (Wilmington, NC), has chosen to lend its voice to the modern civil rights struggle with its April production of William Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet. As the California State Supreme Court considers the legality of Proposition 8 and states such as Vermont consider marriage and civil union bills, the Bard’s classic tale of forbidden love lends itself perfectly to today’s debate over Gay Marriage.

The characters of Romeo and Juliet embody the struggles of many homosexuals today. They are in very much in love and they wish to fortify that love through marriage. However, outside political and societal forces keep them apart forcing them to live their lives in secret and ultimately to take the most drastic measures to be with the people they love.

If allowed to stand in California, Proposition 8 represents a grave injustice there and a certain threat to justice everywhere. For the first time in US history, a group of people were singled out by the voters of a state to have a Constitutionally guaranteed natural right taken away from them for no reason other than that they were homosexual. The right to love and the right to marry are as essential to the human condition as the right to a free press, the right to speak and the right to worship. No force, even the populist will of the people, can be allowed the authority to grant, limit or suppress any of these natural human rights lest all be threatened.

Guerilla Theatre presents…Romeo & Juliet, starring Katie Scofield as Romeo and Quinn Kishpaugh as Juliet, runs April 9-12, 16-19 & 23-25 at the Brown Coat Pub & Theatre (111 Grace St ; Wilmington, NC).
