The Rape Crisis Center of Coastal Horizons Center, Inc., in collaboration with Sunrise Broadcasting of Wilmington, presents the 7th Annual Port City Rock Against Rape – a benefit concert to support the Rape Crisis Center.
Rock Against Rape is scheduled for Friday, April 17th and Saturday, April 18th 2009.
Port City Rock Against Rape is an annual benefit concert for the Rape Crisis Center of Coastal Horizons Center, Inc. in Wilmington, NC. The benefit concert is seen as both a fundraiser for the center and an educational opportunity for the community. Seven years ago, local bands from the area voluntarily put together the event for the very first time to support the Rape Crisis Center. Now, it has become one of the Rape Crisis Center’s biggest and most popular fundraisers. Rock Against Rape will take place on Friday, April 17th and Saturday, April 18th at multiple bars, restaurants, and pubs with a variety of live music. The money raised and donated from cover charges and/or bar proceeds at venues participating in RAR will help keep the Rape Crisis Center up and running.
All money raised goes directly to the Rape Crisis Center to better address the needs of sexual assault victims. They are a nonprofit agency and are only run by grants, fund-raisers and personal donations. Our services include free counseling, advocacy with court and law enforcement, support groups for survivors, teens, children, and parents, free education programs, and 24-hour crisis / hospital response for victim advocacy. The Rape Crisis Center of Coastal Horizons Center, Inc. is the only stand-alone rape and sexual abuse-specific crisis center in Southeastern NC. In the last year, the Rape Crisis Center provided our community with crisis response counseling for over 400 rape and sexual violence victims.
According to the NC Department of Justice, New Hanover County ranks number 4 in the highest incidence of rape per capita in North Carolina. Change is possible, and our community’s dedication to prevention efforts and support for victims only strengthens our fight against this horrible crime, especially in our own community. Rock Against Rape is a perfect example of our community working together to end sexual violence.
