About Headliner Kyler England:
Listening to any Kyler England song, it’s easy to believe you’re hearing a classic in the making: gorgeous, organic pop music that speaks to your heart like a close friend. Her soulful voice draws you in with its fragile strength, then leaves you breathless when it soars to brilliant heights. She sings like you’d always wished you could, with all the raw honesty of your most painful moments and all the beauty of your fiercest hopes. There is something universal going on here, something magical. Comparisons to Sarah McLachlan and Patty Griffin are mere approximations; Kyler has a style and charisma all her own.
Simple Machine marks England’s 5th studio release and her most remarkable collection of songs to date. That’s saying a lot considering her past songs have won numerous songwriting awards (Unisong, Mid-Atlantic, and North Carolina Songwriting Contests), have earned her recognition by the International Acoustic Music Awards (Finalist for Best Female Artist), the Indie Acoustic Project (Best Alternative Rock CD), and Music Connection Magazine (Hot 100 Unsigned Artists of 2007), and appeared on TV and in film (Ghost Whisperer, Army Wives, Guiding Light, Zoey 101, Rollergirls, Paradise City and the film “The Lucky Ones” starring Rachel McAdams and Tim Robbins).
With a southern warmth and charm from her years growing up in North Carolina and a natural instinct for melody and lyrics, honed during a stint at the renowned Berklee College of Music, England crafts songs that are not only addictively catchy but full of depth. The simplicity of her words conveys a deep well of emotion and wisdom–for even in her darkest material, there is always the glimmer of optimism.
On Simple Machine, England wrestles with some tough questions- as evidenced in the title track, “how can you believe the heart is only a simple machine?”- and finds herself torn between God and science, free will and destiny, anger and forgiveness, union and solitude, and of course, the happy love song and the break-up song.
England says of the album, “It’s a little more pop-electronica, a little more alt-country, a little more singer-songwriter, and a lot more me. I feel like with every song I write and every record I make, I get closer to my truest voice both as a singer and writer. These songs all mean a lot to me personally- they’re 3/4 autobiographical and the other 1/4 are inspired by people close to me. And I’m not telling who or which songs so don’t ask,” she adds with a smile.
Playing 100+ shows a year the past 5 years including festivals like Bele Chere and the Toronto Film Festival, England has opened for Sting, Annie Lennox, Kelly Clarkson, Gavin DeGraw, Melissa Etheridge and Avril Lavigne to name a few.
About Mark Kano:
“Walking On Broadway,” the long awaited debut solo record from Mark Kano, the lead singer of Athenaeum, is now available! This is the first collection of new songs written by Kano since Athenaeum’s 2001 self-titled effort on Atlantic Records. The self-produced eight song disc was mixed by Gavin MacKillop (Toad The Wet Sprocket, Goo Goo Dolls, Athenaeum) and recorded at various studios throughout 2008 with the help of fellow musicians Nic Brown, Snuzz, Mike Garrigan and Sam Frazier, and features Kano’s best songs to date. “Walking On Broadway” picks up where we last left Athenaeum, a band that helped create a brand of authentic pop rock that continues to live somewhere just outside the radar of mainstream music. Instantly accessible yet sophisticated and memorable, “Walking On Broadway” promises to please fans of the alternative rock genre.
About Vonrenzo:
Vonrenzo was selected as one of the top unsigned bands in the country to represent New York City at the “Jeff Buckley Rock n’ Roll Hall of Fame Tribute Concert” in July of 2003. Intent on discovering his own musical voice, Adam Luaces paired up with producer and songwriter Kyle ‘Slick’ Johnson (Fischerspooner, Modest Mouse) to create his first Vonrenzo album. In 2006, Vonrenzo released “Intention and the Adequacy of Delusion“. A fearless album of unbridled emotional release, “Intention…” captured the desperate sound of a life in free fall. Luaces then partnered with Nathan Brimmer and Pete Pidgeon to head back into the studio to create “Indica Dove Sei“, released in April 2009. To say that Vonrenzo rose from the ashes is to understate the band’s growth. Vonrenzo’s first album, Intention and the Adequacy of Delusion, was dark, gritty… depressive. Indica is one of love, compassion… forgiveness. Vonrenzo has known the dreamlike nature of existence and the dark side of life; and because of this, the band has an understanding and depth unseen in music today. 2009 brings tour dates across the country and in their hometown of New York City. Check out more on Vonrenzo at www.vonrenzo.com.
About Politics of Confession:
Politics of Confession was formed by Steph Hart in early 2008. But it was not until hooking up with guitarist Steve Rossiter that the
project began to take form enough to present in a live setting. Stephanie’s musical background goes back to 1998,when she formed what is now known as the band, Murder In My Sleep, with husband Chris Hart, (who also sits in with POC from time to time). She is originally from NY. Musically, she is drawn to everything from jazz and americana to metal and punk. There is no secret what she writes about or is influenced by.
Steve Rossiter has been fascinated by music since he can remember. He quotes Pavarotti, “I think a life for music is a life well spent, and it is to this that I have devoted myself.”
He grew up in a Pentecostal church, and was highly influenced by the music there. “They would play old rock & roll songs from the 1950s and change the lyrics to gospel. I didn’t realize it at the time, but I think that experience was the marriage of music and spirituality to me. All music is an expression of communication, a prayer to be heard, and understood.”
The Politics of Confession sound can be described as sparse, emotional, relevant guitar and vocal-driven indie rock.
But there is no plan, the duo simply get together and write and see what happens. After many years of playing music, they both are just creating without boundaries or pressures and enjoying what happens when they do. Steve also plays in the local band Bald Fury,Steph in the rock band Murder In My Sleep, and she also performs with the local noise performance collective 910 Noise under the name “Steph. Dig It.” They like to keep busy.
Steve says of the duo: “Politics feels like home to me. Steph and I typically are right there on the same wavelength musically. She understands and trusts my thinking, musically, and the stuff she comes up with perfectly complements my chord structures.
I really think we are doing something special now, and it’s really exciting to imagine what we are going to be doing in 6 months. This is just the beginning.”

Christie Perry has lived in Wilmington since 1993. She started her career in painting in 1998, has no formal training, and continues (as we all do) to learn every day. Starting out in the decorative arts, Christie has created a variety of murals, faux finishes, and painted furniture. She also began sketching homes and scenes in charcoal, and later, learning figure drawing. Perry began painting with acrylics on canvas around 2000, and this remains what she enjoys the most – layers, color, texture. Right now, she is creating large paintings, tearing paper, and doing more figure drawing. A new series of abstract paintings will be ready to show in the spring. Christie works in her home/studio at the corner of 21st Street and Metts Avenue. The studio is open to the public – call for hours, appointment, or more information

- Why: An estimated 25% to 40% of New York City’s 20,000 runaway and homeless youth are lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgendered. These young people, many of whom have faced harassment and discrimination from the very people that should protect and nurture them, are in desperate need of services to achieve independence and self-sufficiency. Metropolitan Community Charities of New York, a nonprofit social service organization located in New York’s Hell’s Kitchen and Harlem neighborhoods, has responded to meet the needs of this disenfranchised and marginalized group of young, homeless people. Since 2002, the Homeless Youth Services of Metropolitan Community Charities of New York.(MCCNY) has worked tirelessly to meet the unique needs of the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender runaway and homeless youth of New York City. Starting with a 6-bed emergency shelter housed in the church itself (Sylvia’s Place), MCCNY’s services have expanded to include two additional shelters (Sylvia’s East, & Sylvia’s Sugar Hill), a range of social services offered both to shelter residents and other runaway and homeless youth, and a recently operational 24-hour drop-in center, the Marsha P. Johnson Center.
