One of the greatest influences of my life revolved around the one and only Mary Tyler Moore.  For her comedic timing as well as her ability be believable as Mary Richards in the Minneapolis newsroom, her lovable portrayal had me glued to the TV and thinking about being a writer.  Before Ally McBeal and Carrie Bradshaw, there was the original hard-working girl who turned the world on with her smile.

The cast of The Mary Tyler Moore Show helped build a memorable Emmy-award winning series that lasts beyond the test of time.  The charming Ted Baxter (Ted Knight), who has been identifiable for over 30 years of television for his role on the show, building Ted as a pretentious newscaster.  For long-time fans of the show, you won’t see too much of Rhoda (played by Valerie Harper) because at the time she was involved in her own spin-off show.  Mary’s boss, the stout Lou Grant (Ed Asner), as well as the beloved Betty White as Sue Ann Nivens and Cloris Leachman as Phyliss Lindstrom.

Season 5′s DVD set includes three DVDs with 24 episodes.  Disappointingly, there are no extras or behind-the-scenes footage or retrospective by the cast.  This is especially disappointing since die-hard Mary Tyler Moore fans have been waiting for over three years for a new release from the series.  However, the die-hards such as myself won’t be disappointed because the bright color quality remain true to the restoration.

Episodes to not miss:  “Will Mary Richards Go To Jail?”, “You Sometimes Hurt the One You Hate,” “Menage-a-Phyllis, “What Are Friends For?”, “A Girl Like Mary,” and “Ted Baxter’s Famous Broadcasters’ School.”
