We recently spoke with Daniel Ingala of Plushgun, the Brooklyn-based post-punk, synth-driven, indie pop trio, about their exposure through MySpace and the positive and negative impacts of the digital revolution in the music industry, what inspires their music, the non-profits he supports and the Zachary Quinto connection!

Bambi Weavil:  One of the best qualities about your music is it feels very DIY and authentic – as well as MySpace providing you mainstream exposure without having to go the mainstream radio route.  Do you feel your artistry is limitless thanks to avenues such as MySpace?  Do you feel any constraints as a artist?

Daniel Ingala:  I feel that the digital revolution within media has made it a lot easier to be able to put out, essentially, whatever we want. This was great from a new artist perspective because, though my production is still very DYI, I was able to play with a new medium that enabled anyone to listen. I would say it worked in my favor too….

Unfortunately, there is also a negative to the digital media revolution, which essentially pits us against the will of group psychology, which means memes are more powerful than artistry. I would say, this is the biggest limitation with the web, albeit self-imposed.

BW: What inspires your music?  Your lyrics are extremely catchy and your music is on constant repeat.

DI:  Inspiration for me varies. Musically, I am inspired by pretty things that pop. When it comes to the proverbial “muse” I would say that, at  least in our debut record Pins and Panzers, I am inspired by nostalgia, lost hearts and the seemingly small things that wind up crafting our adult behavior.

BW:  What have been some of your favorite places to play so far on tour?

DI:  I didn’t realize until recently how much I love Texas. Something about its laissez-faire attitude lends itself to be a great place to play  all-ages shows.

BW:  What projects are you working on that you can tell our readers about?

DI:  Right now we are wrapping up a music video for “A Crush to Pass the Time” which plays with the idea of internet memes in a familiar language. I am also working on a new track that will be out potentially by the holiday season.

BW:  What causes or non-profits are close to your heart?

DI:  I am a big supporter of the marriage equality movement, and support groups like EQCA, I am also a proponent of separating church and state, both of which I find an allied attitude with the ACLU, and had I actually taken the LSAT, I could be working there today….I don’t necessarily regret that…

BW:  We gotta know – explain the sexy Zachary Quinto connection, how
did that come about?

DI:  The now-famous Zachary Quinto “milk” video was the product of a friend of mine Tyler Shields. Tyler has always been a fan of our music and, while making his video portrait, felt it would only be perfect to use our song. I am quite pleased to be on degree away from Spock.
