We sat down with Yelle this week to discuss her music, her current US tour promoting her successful album, Pop Up, her gay fan base, what turns her on, and more:

Bambi Weavil: Yelle, we think you’re magically delicious, hi! Your US tour kicks off in Dallas this week and you’ll be everywhere all over the country for the next two months. What can fans expect to see on this tour?

Yelle: I’m very excited to begin this tour in the US! We do a real live show. There are three of us on stage, with GrandMarnier playing the drums and Tepr the keyboards. It’s a real rock and electronic live show because we have a rock energy and we try to mix the songs like in a DJ’s set. And we hope the public is ready to dance and have fun at our shows!

BW: Congrats on the recent launch of your new music video “Ce Jeu” and we like the random insert of the dinosaurs! What was the inspiration behind the video?

Y: We worked since the beginning with GrandMarnier, with Tepr joining us in November 2006, and we always talk about everything together. It’s important to share ideas and to mix our visions of music, videos, outfits, etc.. So we decided to work with Yoann Lemoine on this video. With him, we shared ideas about lights, outfits and the 90’s stuff that we put on the video!

BW: Your “A Cause Des Garcons” TEPR Remix has been viewed over 10 million times – has this translated into gay club success for you?

Y: The gay crowd is really open minded and they have a good vision of life, enjoying it and it’s the same for me, so I think maybe the gay crowd is really reactive to our music because we want to share happy feelings!

BW: How would you describe your music to first time listeners?

Y: It’s a mix between pop music and electronic music cause we grow up with mainstream pop like Cindi Lauper, Michael Jackson, Prince, Madonna and more. We like the pop melodies and we are the children of Daft Punk, and we like powerful sounds.

BW: What inspires your music? What’s your favorite song to perform?

Y: I think our life inspires our music! We are really aware about the problems in the world but we try with our music maybe to forget that sometimes and to enjoy life. I like to sing “Tristesse Joie” because this song talks about death, but with a happy view and positive feelings!

BW: What non-profits do you support? How important is activism to you?

Y: I don’t want to use my music for political means or against things at the moment, but in my private life, I try to engage myself in a association of students who fight against AIDS and try to protect young people and give them information, condoms, etc…

BW: Are you working on any upcoming projects that you can tease our readers with?

Y: At the moment it’s complicated cause we are on the road and we miss time to work, but we hope during the winter we’ll began to work on something new!! And we’re very excited!!

BW: What turns you on?

Y: Love!

BW: And that’s the perfect way to end this interview – thank you Yelle for your time and your amazing energy! You can check out Yelle and her US tour, visit her official MySpace, http://www.myspace.com/iloveyelle or www.yelle.fr.
