It’s True, It’s All True.

by Greg Ragland

“Rockabilly” is a musical genre that is easily misunderstood by it’s fans and detractors alike. The influence and popularity of the style waned in the 1960s, but during the late 1970s and early 1980s, rockabilly enjoyed a major revival of popularity that has endured to the present. And one of the people who has stood at the forefront of the Rockabilly movement is Kim Lenz.

Backed ably by the Jaguars, Kim has taken the genre and stood it on it’s ear, making the sound uniquely her own. While most Rockabilly has themes that were more geared for a Male oriented sound – Jerry Lee Lewis, Elvis and even more diverse artists like Adam Ant & the Stray Cats had major success with it – Lenz has worked her voice into becoming a moving force for the case of Female oriented Rockabilly.

Her latest album, It’s All True released by Riley Records,  has brought Rockabilly back with a vengeance. With titles from “Touch Me” to “Zombie for your Love“, the album basically drags the listener down “memory lane” with it’s requisite stops touting love, angst & joy while using  deep bass fiddle beats and guitar riffs straight from the ebst the genre has to offer.

As Rolling Stone said of Lenz: If Elvis had been a woman, he probably would have sounded just like Dallas-ite Kim Lenz…
