Tori Amos – Abnormally Attracted To Sin

by Bambi Weavil

Tori AmosAbnormally Attracted To Sin, her 10th studio album, is yet another epic narrative by the emotionally-charged, lyrically brilliant and boundary pushing singer/songwriter.  A DVD of corresponding ‘visualettes’ for each track will accompany the deluxe version, which adds to the level of artistry Amos is known and respected for.

The album’s title comes from a line in Guys and Dolls, originally spoken by the character of Sarah Brown.  Amos investigates in this rlease how we’re controlled by the threat of dispair, how to reclaim the right to be an individual, the power of power and the ability to think for yourself, and not to be afraid of being a spiritual, sexual creature.

In “Flavor” she continues questioning (“Will you chose fear?  Will you choose love?”) jurisdictions and the need to “turn up the frequency” which would also make a great sequel to this song, the focus on frequencies in all our lives.

“Give” focuses on people who expect regrets when there are none to have.  “Strong Black Vine” investigates the effect of religious intolerance, and the bondage it can create.  The track is brimming with Tori’s power vocals and soaring lyric placement, and is a strong must from AATS.  “Welcome to England” would make a great dance remix, while I think “Maybe California” could even be stronger even stripped down acoustically even further.  “Fast Horse” would make a interesting music video concept, but the song that could change and touch lives from AATS is “Ophelia.”  “Ophelia” focuses on the secrets of self destruction and mutilation as a answer for unspeakable pain hidden under sleeves, and how to break the chain of pain.  This song is a must for those who know someone struggling with abuse, and I do hope that this will make it’s way into mainstream as a song of taking back the power from someone who wants to take it from you.
