Spiral Beach – The Only Really Thing

I can’t help but adjust to this new wave of indie rock. In a time where music is becoming more and more proclaimed for its commercial appeal and not its merits, music is on the run. Yet, Spiral Beach (Facebook, MySpace, Twitter) really hit the nail on the head with The Only Really Thing. If I have to listen to this new music, I hope more of it comes out sounding like this and not like this new wimpy hipster acoustic garbage; but what is it I like about this album?
Well, the power of this group’s commitment to being groovy is held in high regard by me, and that is groovy in all senses of the word. Some of these songs can be danced to, some of these songs are just very cool and listenable. “Domino” is one of the best tracks on the record, easily, and it won’t leave my head. If there is any song you have to hear from this album, this is definitely the one. I can’t help but name-drop the band The Epoxies, because it reminds me so remarkably of some of their work.
The musicians’ melodies on this record are some of the highest highs that it has to offer. These are guitar and vocal lines to die for. The primary vocalist, Maddy, has a perfect voice for the band, with an urgency and a power to her notes, and it is counterbalanced with harmonies from the backing vocalist and guitarist Airick, and the vocals altogether range from frantic to ethereal.
So, for a judgment, if you’re wondering whether or not to buy this record: do it. And go to their show; the Internet claims them to be wonderful, and the live videos seem to agree. If Spiral Beach reform and come near me soon, I’ll be there.
