Singer, guitarist, and songwriter Sonya Kitchell, an (18-year old) jazz/pop powerhouse with the smoke and honey voice, is releasing her second album, This Storm, with maturity and confidence well beyond her years.  She is the best young talent I’ve heard since Joss Stone, period.

Kitchell who has the Norah Jones/Sarah McLachlan comparison “it” factor going for her, but there’s no question that she’s going to surpass every good review you read.  Sometimes Kitchell reminds me of unappreciated and very talented county/jazz singer/songwriter Shelby Lynne.  Her gift is timeless, the ability to fit into pop/jazz easily, but this is yet another artist that should not be limited to a genre.  Kitchell even has some semblance to Sheryl Crow detected in her in “For Every Drop,” one of the strongest songs on this album.  “Borderline” reminds me a lot of something K.T. Tunstall would cut, with the pop/rock drumming that works so well with Kitchell’s vocal styling.

Her album touches on the theme of war, loss, hope and solitude like with “Soldier’s Lament”, “Robin in the Snow,” and “Walk Away.”  “Here To There” is one of those perfect blues/jazz songs that is simple and easy to relate to: “Ask myself do I care / Cause Life is short and rarely fair.”  “Walk Away” is heartbreaking, and “Fire” is almost classic rock-like with Wynonna Judd-like blues gutsy sound thrown in…and I love it.

“Who Knows After All” is incredible and beyond her years…this is only the beginning of a very long and successful career for someone who recorded her album at only 15 years old.  I would love to hear “Who Knows After All” recorded acoustically her vulnerability and believability even more on display.  Don’t hesitate to pick up This Storm on September 2nd, it is impossible to not be smitten with Kitchell.
