Solange (Knowles) released her second album in stores today, Sol-Angel and the Hadley St. Dreams, and I don’t feel she’s out necessarily to compete with the pop stars of today.  She isn’t your typical pop star, and that’s a good thing.  She doesn’t sound too commercial, she sounds more like a jazz/Motown throwback with a hip hop twist.

“God Given Name” was the perfect way to start off the album, and a great representation of how I’d view the album as a whole.  Solange has gorgeous vocals, and I can resist the need to compare her to her sister, Beyoncé.  When I first heard her, I didn’t even make the connection, they are two different artists and need to be respected and viewed as such.

“Dancing In The Dark” is a gorgeous soul/jazz styling and is one of my favorite tracks on the album.  “Would’ve Been The One” is a page out of the stylings of women like The Supremes.  It’s nice to hear stylings like this return from someone who can pull it off like Solange can.

A strong surprise from this album is “Cosmic Journey,” I would like her to experiment with this styling more in another album- experimental pop/rock with elements of R&B – and completely different than all the retro feelings of this album.  This song is just asking to be remixed.

The album ends on a strong note, with “I Decided – Pt. 2″ which sounds a lot like her Destiny Child’s days as a back up dancer, with some soul disco temperament.  A strong effort by Solange, but I feel like we’re just scratching the surface of Solange’s talent.
