Ron Morris is a outstanding openly out folk singer/songwriter who reminds me of James Taylor with his quality songcrafting and acoustic sound. Truth Stained Lies, Morris’ third album and first full-length album in three years, is a collection of stories that Morris tells himself or that other tells him about who he is, what he’s scared of, what should happen, what actually happened and so on. It’s all about identity, perspective, finding the shred of truth in these stories.
In “Truth Stained Lies” he writes: “How many words must a man swallow / To finally make it all just go away?” “Swerve” would be a interesting remix because I could almost hear some drum and bass influence, while “March On” is a beautiful ballad between a father and his son.
Morris is at his best when he sings about relationships. “Fear of Falling” is a beautiful romantic ballad of enjoying each moment for what it is. The acoustic “Back and Forth” is my favorite song off of the album, about honest dialogue in a relationship without losing your personal identity. “Masterpiece of Why” is intelligently written and musically easy-going, with one poignant line: “my favorite jeans and your brand new life.”
As Morris investigates discovering the truth inbetween the cracks on Truth Stained Lies, fans are treated with a acoustic/folk/country album that ties together melody rich songs and well-crafted yet simple writing that let you believe what you will.
