It’s been years since the Swedish pop star Robyn released an album in the U.S and she’s back with her latest electro-dancepop release Robyn. Robyn self released this album under her own record label, Konichiwa Records, in Sweden in 2005 but it wasn’t until April of 2008 that it was released in the US. Robyn started Konichiwa Records in 2005 solely to release her own music. She didn’t want to become the Christina Aguilera or Britney Spears, which her prior label was heavily leaning towards. When she returned to Sweden, she was influenced by fellow Swedish band The Knife and took on a more electronic-pop sound. The first track on the album gives a short introduction about Robyn before launching into “Konichiwa Bitches.”

Her earlier music was poppy but Robyn is full of upbeat, sophisticated electro-pop songs that can relate to people while still having fun. In an interview with Clash Music, Robyn describes “pop” music as “music that handles the present time in a way that people can relate to”.

The programming of this album is also more extensive than her earlier releases, showing that Robyn has definitely grown as a musician during her absence from the spotlight. “Cobrastyle” showcases a variety of different electronic beats and elements. There are many bits of candy for your ears on each song, which makes it a great album to listen to more than once.

The overall feel of the album is fun and catchy, but don’t like that overshadow the true beauty in Robyn’s voice, which can be found on the soft and intimate song “Eclipse”. On “With Every Heartbeat”, Robyn collaborates with Kleerup, which helped this song gain popularity in the UK.

Outside of her music career, Robyn has devoted time as an ambassador to UNICEF to help children in need. Robyn most recently performed at the Nobel Peace Prize concert held in Oslo.
