Rihanna – Good Girl Gone Bad Shines

by Bambi Weavil

Rihanna good girl gone bad album cover

Rihanna, a beautiful Barbados native, is on top of the world and reaching a audience of over 80 million people at only 19 years of age, with “Umbrella” one of her hot new singles off of Good Girl Gone Bad from SRP and Def Jam Records that everyone is hearing played in massive rotation in Top 40 stations across the country. Good Girl Gone Bad is one of the hottest albums released this summer, that is the right balance of a dance/pop record and flirting with R&B toward the end of the experience.

Rihanna’s third album in less than two years, Good Girl Gone Bad is the follow-up to 2006’s platinum release of A Girl Like Me which spanned hits such as “S.O.S.” and “Unfaithful.” Good Girl Gone Bad gives us a all-star production team featuring Timbaland, C. “Tricky” Stewart, Stargate and the team of Evan Rogers and Carl Sturken, as well as the songwriting contributions including the always-working and current standard of pop music, Justin Timberlake and Ne-Yo. Rihanna was personally signed by Def Jam president and CEO Shawn “Jay-Z” Carter. Not only is she working with the heavy-hitters of the music industry, she’s now among the ranks of Queen Latifah, Molly Sims, Christie Brinkley and Keri Russel as the newest CoverGirl.

“Umbrella” kicks off the album, and celebrates the catchy, fun and current pop pattern of Gwen Stefani and Fergie songs that sneak into your music comfort zone by repeating a phrase (in this case, “umbrella”) or spelling out words in songs. This song has been so successful, it scored a perfect trifecta being #1 on the Billboard Hot 100, Pop 100 and Hot Digital Song charts.

“Push Up On Me” is really sexy and will make a great club hit. This album is very much locked into the dance club album category, and
perhaps the biggest club anthem to come from this record is “Don’t Stop The Music.” One-stop party with some elements of “Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin” by Michael Jackson, this song should be pushed next.

“Shut Up and Drive” is another popular current single that I’ve heard in heavy rotation on radio, and if I hadn’t heard it on this record, I never would have guessed it was the same artist who sings “Umbrella.” It has a comfortable summer flavor to it that can be played again a year from now without it suffering burnt out airplay.

“Hate That I Love You,” featuring Ne-Yo, takes the album around to the R&B/Pop curve for a very nice collaboration. I also thought the confessional styling of “Rehab” was appropriate and is one of the strongest written songs on the album. “Rehab” is about getting away from the dependence of someone bad for you, with lyrics such as: “It’s like you were my favorite drug / The only problem is that you was using me / In a different way that I was using you.” The confessional style also worked very well with another amazing song called “Question Existing,” about who do you really live for and who you really are.

This record will appeal to many audiences, with a strong balance of club hits and R&B landscape. If you haven’t picked up a Rihanna
album, Good Girl Gone Bad is the album to get.
