The undeniably gorgeous superstar Rihanna is back, again, this time with an entirely remixed version of her double platinum album Good Girl Gone Bad. It’s full of all the old favorites, originally released back in the summer of oseven, but now with a little more funk thrown in.
The album starts off with “Umbrella”, arguably the artist’s most well-known track. For someone who, to be completely frank, was not a big fan of the song the first time around, this remix adds just enough into the mix to revamp it into almost an entirely new-sounding song. Back in 2007 when the original track made its debut on the airwaves, every radio station and DJ around seemingly needed to fill some quota of play times – it was on three or four times an hour no matter where you went. The overplayed-ness of the song left the dreaded “ella, ella, ella” stuck in listeners headaches everywhere. After that summer (ironically enough with very little rain) I’d hoped to never hear the song again. However the first track on this album,
“Umbrella” remixed by Seamus Haji & Paul Emanuel, brings a much faster pace and thicker base beat, almost masking the track’s ridiculous use of repetition. A much better version, and one that won’t leave you longing for an aspirin.
Now “Disturbia” on the other hand – there’s such a thing as not messing with what already works. One of the more recent chart-topping hits from Rihanna was gold from the get-go in mine and many others’
books, and should’ve been left well enough alone. Although to be honest, nothing much has changed: Jody Den Broeder has added a few Star Wars sound effects and a more pronounced tempo accent, but I
suppose the track retains much of its original sound.
By far the song that stands out the most is “Shut Up & Drive”, redone by the Wideboys who give it a Euro electro feel. This lost classic that’s regretfully faded from club culture is back. DJs who have feared its datedness and lack of dance floor enthusiasm will be glad to know they now have the go ahead to bring “Shut Up” back into their playlists. This version is entirely rejuvenated, like an old man on Viagra, but cooler. I challenge anyone to listen, and not feel the urge to tap a foot or two.
Also worth noting: the “Don’t Stop The Music” remix almost manages to incorporate a little jazzy feel while staying true to its dance roots, and “Breaking Dishes” rewarrants the fact that it deserves more attention as a single. “Push Up On Me” also has a great light-hearted flare that would be well-suited for a body fit class at your local gym, or on a float during the pride parade. Overall, if you’re about to step on a treadmill or need to throw down some moves in your bedroom to blow off some steam, rest assured Good Girl Gone Bad: The Remixes, will do the trick.
