Grammy-nominated pop superstars, The Pussycat Dolls, have been consistent in their quest for Doll Domination since their worldwide #1 hit “Don’t Cha” from four years ago.  Easily, they could have been ruled out as a simple flash in the pan, this album has a lot to prove against critics looking to dismiss.  Nicole, Ashley, Jessica, Melody and Kimberly have headlined their own tour around the globe, while also sharing the stage with the likes of The Black Eyed Peas and Christina Aguilera.  Doll Domination debuted at number four on the Billboard 200 in September 2008, with 79,000 copies sold in its first week.

Collaborating with Timbaland, Cee-Lo and Sean Garrett, among others, the first hot single “When I Grow Up” is exploding across the country even months later after it’s release.  The ladies are great at producing hits that last beyond one radio rotation.  You can hear the Timbaland influence in “Magic”, and in the orchestra fused pop track sounding like off a video game soundtrack, “Halo.”  I enjoyed the jazz-jumping “In Person” – which ideally I wish would lead to more songs like this in the future.  The Pussycat Dolls can play with their sound and doing a more jazz fused album, would be a interesting experimentation of their talent.

“Watcha Think About That” featuring Missy Elliott has a Katy Perry namedropping reference, while “I Hate This Part” taps into a pop ballad that is nothing like I’ve heard from the pop singles released from the ladies. “Watchamacallit” reminds me a lot of poppier Lady Gaga sound and influence.

There have been some misses on this album, instead of taking the time to craft a overall theme to the album, it is almost like a factory for pop charting, which I believe they are much better than that.  “Who’s Gonna Love You” sounds like a track Janet Jackson let go, and “Happily Never After” feels overproduced. “Out of This Club” features R. Kelly, and has almost a Fergie/Britney sparkle to the pop track.

They are going to have a explosive year, touring with the hotness Lady Gaga and Britney Spears, because without a doubt they are a attraction all on their own.  However, when they are ready to release a third album, they need to turn back the desire to compete in the pop landscape and dropping the album too quickly – because they don’t have to: they have established themselves as main contenders.
