When I first got my review package, I wasn’t sure what to expect seeing this beautiful, young lady sitting on a yellow couch with a bright smile and two dogs on her lap.  Nellie McKay (Facebook, MySpace) sounds not of this era in her fun tribute to Doris Day.  In a present day world that is full of heavy news, Nellie’s tribute provides perfect timing with light, pleasant and believable optimism pouring at every pore of this record.  McKay proves that classic artists, no matter what genre, will always be in style.

“The Very Thought Of You” opens up the album gently and sweetly, and “Do Do Do” sets up McKay as a artist you can believe in.  McKay tackles “Sentimental Journey” with ease, showing her vocal ‘chops’ and maturity as a seasoned performer. “Send Me No Flowers”  and “I Remember You” are also bright gems.  McKay contributes one song, “If I Ever Had A Dream,” that captures the optimism, heart and atmosphere of Normal As Blueberry Pie.

McKay has a reputation as an outspoken and fierce advocate for animal rights, feminism, civil rights and other progressive ideals.  In fact, don’t miss opening up her CD artwork for inspiring quotes from various timeless leaders.  Her fan following has a section dedicated to activism on NellieMcKay.org, a fan page dedicated to the performer. Doris Day was also supportive of animal rights, founding the Doris Day Animal Foundation and the Doris Day Animal League.
