Better Than Blood Review

Simply put, my favorite artist of 2007 is Megan McCauley. Strong, blunt, sexual and talented – there’s no reason why this woman shouldn’t be blasted everywhere and not be in the same category of strong musical artists like Pink and Lisa Marie Presley. Better Than Blood could be considered my “baby” album of this year – I’m constantly playing it, talking about it to friends and peers. It is a “go to” record to fire me up and the perfect album to rock out all to all day.
Megan was inspired by Janis Joplin and I can understand why, neither artist was conventional, both rebel spirits,making music and living their lives their own way. Megan stands out in a cookie cutter musical landscape with her fiery red hair, tattoos and piercings with a direct presence that cannot go unnoticed. Megan looks beyond her appearance and sees someone with three sides: “the dark-minded, corset-wearing creature fond of Halloween, a snide punk kid who loves to fuck with the system and the freak who’s completely out of the picture.” We like it. Her voice, her mind blowing gift, strong, sexual, intense yet sensual at times, stands out in a way that commanded me to not let this outspoken, truth telling artist go without a major push. I’m telling you – this is what music is all about. This is a artist I stand by 1000 percent.
Megan kicks off the album with “Migraine,” seeing the mundane of how everyone’s the same and being better off without the bullshit. “Fragile” is what it is but has the power to keep going even if it means breaking. The debut single, the hot “Tap That” has a very playful, sexually open vibe with it that is impossible not to love. “Wonder,” a song that speaks of someone who has went through a lot of bullshit and storms, with lines such as: “When bleeding is feeling and feeling ain’t real / Will I see you when I open my eyes?” was written when she was 14. That’s just a testament to the talent of Megan’s songwriting.
“I Realize” has a more dark-pop rock feel, and is about the realization that the only person she can count on that hasn’t let her down is herself and wonders why she can’t die. “See Through” is a great rock track and one of my favorites off Better Than Love, about love and being transparent in wanting and desiring someone. “Come To Me” should also be a strong contender as a single, with the fast-paced string arrangement that add to the fury of desire and intensity of the passion of devotion and protection of the person she loves.
Having seen the live performance of “Porcelain Doll” with the piano and string accompaniment on Dr. Phil, that really hammered home how versatile Megan’s musical talents are. I think any person who has ever dealt with divorce, parental issues or abandonment from anyone will strongly related to this song. “I’ll Pay You To Shoot Him” closes out the album, is unapologetic and autobiographical song regarding Megan’s troubled relationship with her father. Don’t feel sorry for her, this is a unapologetic punch back at what she went through and Megan’s a true fighter to getting through life.
If there is only one album you should buy for yourself, this is the one.
