Multi-platinum Grammy winning quintet Maroon 5 puts some new twists, collaborations and upkeeping on 18 of their greatest hits on Call & Response:  The Remix Album.  The remixes include contributions/interpretations from Pharrell Williams, Deerhoof, of Montreal, Cool Kids, David Banner, Paul Oakenfold and more.

The album kicks off with a hip-hop remix of “If I Never See Your Face Again” by acclaimed hip-hop producer Swizz Beatz.  “Wake Up Call” featuring Mary J. Blige was remixed by Mark Ronson, perking up the song with a jazz flavor.  “Sunday Morning” is such a easy-going song, while “Makes Me Wonder” has a intimate instrumental, stripped down sound mixed in with hip hop beats  from Just Blaze that could get this song re-charted if released as it is now.

“This Love” with the Tricky Stewart remix was borderline annoying with the ricochet sound effect, I loved the original version and I have heard better remixes of this song in the past.  “She Will Be Loved”, Pharell Williams version, didn’t do a disservice to the song, but I expected a bigger vision.

“Wake Up Call” featuring David Banner showcased more drum and bass, and one of my favorite Maroon Five songs of all time, “Harder To Breathe” featuring The Cool Kids simply kicks ass and rocks out hard.  The second part of the album is heavily focused on techno remixes, with my favorite being Paul Oaklenfold’s version of “If I Never See Your Face Again” featuring Rihanna that closes out this fun collection.

This is the perfect album for Maroon 5 fans, and a great representation of their hits catalogue with a fresh coat of paint.
