Mariah Carey doesn’t disappoint with her latest release, E=MC², which is living on the album and singles chart. Her eleventh album of her career, Mariah proves that you can have career longevity and still be contemporary. This may be one of her best albums of her career, written and produced by Mariah, C. “Tricky” Stewart and The-Dream, with special guests including Jermaine Dupri, DJ Toomp, Stargate, Will I Am, Bryan Michael Cox, Nate “Danjahandz” James Poyser. Mariah has created the Mariah Sound, a nice blend of pop, R&B and hip hop that keeps her on the pulse and setting the standard for everyone else in the music industry.
Mariah has done a great job of managing her voice on the album, not needing to show her full vocal prowess in every song, we already know she has “the gift.” What Mariah does however is use her talents to make blazing songs like “Touch My Body” and every song on the album has the ability to be a radio-ready hit, and that’s the marking of a great talent.
The album kicks off with “Migrate” featuring T-Pain, about moving like a VIP and making a entrance, and Mariah’s entrance on this album is hot like the true VIP she is. “Touch My Body,” Mariah’s 18th number one hit, surpassing one of the most enduring chart records in Billboard history, Elvis Presley’s 17 #1’s, is the Mariah Sound at it’s best–danceable, memorable, contemporary and catchy.
“Cruise Control” would be a great remixed and I love when Mariah plays with reggae beats in her music. “Side Effects” featuring Young Jeezy, is hip hop-focused on trying to keep going when life gets tough, and put a smile on even if it’s not what you’re feeling: “Vacant inside, no one was there / couldn’t be real, had to keep quiet / once in a while I put up a fight it’s just too much / night after night.” “I’m That Chick” surprised me, it sounds like something Janet Jackson would cover. “Love Story” is fine, but it doesn’t inspire me as most of Mariah’s music does. “I’ll Be Lovin’ U Long Time” is fun, upbeat and addictive and will make a good summer follow-up hit to “Touch My Body.” “O.O.C.” is also going to be a huge dance hit for Mariah.
“I Stay In Love” is natural Mariah that still has the ability to send chills when you hear her voice. When I want to hear a pure piano pop ballad, I want to hear it from Mariah Carey and she always delivers. “Thanks 4 Nothin’” is a great moving on anthem that says it all, showing reflection and maturity, and was a great choice for this album.
One of the biggest surprises on this album is “Bye Bye” which could end up being a strong hit (and is reportedly Mariah’s next choice as single) for her like “One Sweet Day” was. “Bye Bye” is about departure, whether it be separated by death or in relationships, Mariah has the ability to capture relationships and synergy well in her music. Mariah closes out E=MC² with “I Wish You Well,” a gospel strong album, and is a musical testament to Mariah’s ability to overcome with her faith.
Mariah delivers a really strong fun album and one of the best recent releases of this year, with E=MC², and there is no doubt she is still the standard in pop music.
