Lez Zeppelin – The Hotness That Keeps On Dripping
by Bambi Weavil
There’s a whole lot to love about Lez Zeppelin and their first studio album. These girls cover the great Led Zeppelin, and they do it well, in all their collective hotness, sex appeal and sexy swagger that make any doubters that a all-girl Led Zeppelin cover band can rock out with the same “rock you over” goodness that the boys brought. You couldn’t ask for a better endorsement than the fact that the producer of this album is the legendary Eddie Kramer, who has worked with Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, KISS and AC/DC.
“Whole Lotta Love” was a great choice to kick off the album as the powerful rocking voice of Sarah McLellan sings impressively and respectfully in point-on headlining form as Robert Plant did with Led Zeppelin. Steph Paynes (guitars), Lisa Brigantino (bass/keys) and Helen Destroy (drums) round out Lez Zeppelin and give very strong performances, making this group work and rock hard. “Since I’ve Been Loving You” is incredible and even a casual fan of Led Zeppelin will fall in love with this song. “Communication Breakdown” could get some serious airplay, sounding punk-filled and fresh. “Winter Sun” is a original instrumental by the girls, and doesn’t rock the boat on the Led Zeppelin sound. I would be highly interested in hearing more original work because they have the capacity to capture to play like the rock goddesses that they are and create more music in their own tradition.
“Rock N’ Roll” is impossible not to sing-along with and doesn’t disappoint. “Kashmir” was as good as it’s ever been, and the one thing Lez Zeppelin did that is both great but yet a challenge: there are only eight songs on this album! We’re ready for the next serving plate of musical hotness from one of the hottest indy (cover) bands I’ve heard in a long time.
