Patti LaBelle, Nona Hendryx and Sarah Dash have unparalleled success, longevity and creditability in the history of female groups. Since their original formation at the dawn of the girl-group era as The Bluebelles (with then-forth member Cindy Birdsong) in 1961, through their incarnation as a R&B powerhouse (Patti LaBelle & The Bluebelles), and on to their pioneering years as the unprecedented rock-soul-funk trio Labelle, Hendryx, LaBelle and Dash have remained in a league of their own. This album is going to rock you, stir you and remind you just why that Labelle is legendary.
All star producers including Lenny Kravitz, Gamble & Huff, and Wyclef Jean, are producing this long-awaited album, 32 years later, aptly titled Back to Now. These women are amazing, they never lose their cutting edge and they are always in style without selling out. “Roll Out” gets better every time I hear it and could easily be a hit on radio today. “System” was originally supposed to be on a Labelle record in 1977, but it couldn’t be more current. It’s got a rugged, R&B/blues backbone with the story of following your heart as opposed to following the aggressive system.
Another anthem is the plea for change in the world from hurt and pain and all the latest events that have rocked the world is “Tears For The World.” A beautiful R&B torch song for civil rights pioneer, Rosa Parks, is “Dear Rosa”, while “Candlelight” is just classic Nona Hendryx, sexy and undenible. The entire album is a must have, it’s the classic Labelle that will always be contemporary.
