The new Kylie Minogue album, Boombox , is a remix collection of her songs.  Sometimes remixed albums aren’t really worth it because they just seem like recycled music, but I think that in this case, it might be something to check out. Half of the songs have a kind of retro, disco feel to them.  That’s most evident in “Your Disco Needs You.” This is the very worst song on the album. I felt like I fell through a time warp back to boogie down time. I understand that that’s the theme of the song, but the Village People-like chorus in the background is just too much.  On the other hand, if you like the modern disco genre, there are a few other songs you might like, including the “On a Night Like This” remix, and “Spinning Around.” “Love at First Sight” combines that with a very ambient sound, while “I Believe in You” makes me feel like I am zooming through tunnels in a dark night.

The other main themes of the album are very modern, club songs. I have to admit, these are more my favorite. “In My Arms” is on my own personal IPod, just a different mix than is on this album. The mix here is slower, but with a good beat. The “In Your Eyes” mix is a high energy dub and by far the best track on the entire album. It has a slight latin beat, but it made me want to turn it up LOUD and just dance. Other good dance songs were “Slow” and “Giving You Up.” There were even a couple end of the night songs, namely “The One,” which is a total ‘wake up, it’s time to go home and the lights will be on at any moment’ song.

Overall, in Merri-land, I would have arranged the tracks in a different order. Had some of the more poppy ones, such as the title track, “Boombox,” at the beginning, the high energy, peak hour club songs in the middle, then finish off with the end of the night songs. Played that way, Boombox takes you through a whole range of musical emotions that one may feel during an entire night out on the town.  Finally, the best thing about a remix CD is simply that, everything’s remixed! Personally, I listen to mostly remixed songs. I love anything with a beat, and that is exactly what you will find here…familiar songs with a new twist.  Not every one of them will get you going…a couple were so boring that I forgot they were playing, but on the whole, anything that evokes a reaction is a good solid album.
