If there is perfection in the detail, singer/songwriter Katie Sawicki has one of the best looking CD packages I’ve ever seen.  Time Spent Lost focuses on a postcard theme, which has the lyrics in postcard form with a different photo on each card.

Katie reminds me a great deal of Erin McKeown and Ani DiFranco, with emotionally charged urban folk from her Brooklyn apartment in New York.  “Tuesday” is so confessional, “You were standing with your messed up hair and I was hanging on your every word, your every word.“  “Moving On” is poetic, and “Hanging On” is brilliant about knowing when it’s over in a relationship, and deserves to be heard on the radio.

“Good Thing” is also a great confessional, about being in a good place in your life, but still thinking about a past relationship: “Cause where would I be now without this mix of your songs?  How then would my gut know where to situation its own heart? – calling out to god.  I’m just glad I got to see your face, got to take you home“.

There is so much loneliness addressed throughout the album, and relationships that have come and gone and linger just a bit.  “Ironbound” has great line after line, “We filled that porch up with the sins of the church,” and simplicity of “Longest Year” is so affective.

Sawicki has a strong album with Time Spent Lost, her emotional voice, her carefully crafted lyrics, well-thoughtout artistic presentation, she traditional and very contemporary and more than relevant.
