Jem’s sophomore album, Down To Earth, has what I look for in a album:  something that is different than anything else I have heard recently, has artistic merit, and I never get tired of playing it.  This album has all these qualities.

I have a difficult time describing her sound exactly – it’s not something I can box, and that’s what I love about Jem.  Jem is trance meets pop meets techno meets euphoria.  “Crazy” has a Stevie Wonder influence with a funky banjo, while “I Want You To..” is a Latin-flavored track about sexual attraction.

“It’s Amazing,” the first single off the album is about personal empowerment, and is featured on the original soundtrack to the blockbuster film, Sex And The City .  “Keep On Walking” could either be stripped down even further or stepped up into a great remix.  “You Will Make It” is a special poetic and beautiful collaboration with South African sing-songwriter and poet-activist Vusi Mahlasela, recalling 9/11, and dealing with the suffering of loss. “I Always Knew” could be described as a “I told you so” song, while “Aciid!” is a blistering fun dance-pop tune that gives some Japanese flow and shows Jem’s versatility as a artist.  At the other end of the spectrum is the contemplative “And So I Pray” which could be a good movie soundtrack single, as it interpolates a sample of “A Summer Long Since Past,” from British cult artist Virgina Astley.  The final track on Down To Earth, is “On Top Of The World” which feels like a floating pop poem and the perfect way to close out a very easy-going album.  Easy to love Jem is a must for your collection and I’m ready for her to do some shows to support the album!
