Olde School, the new album from New York City’s East Village Opera Company took twelve months to make as well as 14 engineers to record and mix the 65 involved musicians in 10 different studios around the world! Needless to say, this was a global effort to record the world’s greatest opera songs.
You may have heard of other attempts for rock/R&B/pop to meet opera, but East Village Opera Company get it right. They bring new life and energy into their interpretations, without disrespecting the traditional styling. The East Village Opera Company has brought celebration and renewal into their music, and if you’re a fan of musicals and Broadway, then you’re going to love this album.
“The Ride” is sexy, old school rock and roll and the perfect way to kick off the album. “King of the Night” is rock and roll if Mozart met Queen, while “Brindisi Libera (Pop the Cork)” is old school R&B and rock, with some tribal elements (and horns!) thrown in there for fun. “Soldiers” from Charles Gounod’s Faust is a must hear, and I would love to see this re-mixed, produced as a video and released as a single.
You can catch them on tour which features features 2 vocalists, a 4-person rock band, and a 3-piece string section, all led by East Village Opera Company co-founders Tyley Ross (vocals) and Peter Kiesewalter (keyboards). They’ll be playing music both from Olde School and their self-titled 2005 Decca Records debut. East Village Opera Company is a hot pick that will surprise a lot of people but leaving people convinced they made the right decision to check them out.
