Depeche Mode – Sounds of the Universe
by Bambi Weavil
Groundbreaking, chart-topping electro legends and one of the most influential bands of the post-punk era, Depeche Mode have recently released their long-anticipated new studio album, Sounds Of The Universe. Their sound remains consistent, a circular musical sphere of dance, ambient, rock, pop, and synth-techno that makes their sound undeniably their own.
The album itself is a landscape of ambient DM, haunting, and is mood heavy. “In Sympathy,” and “Miles Away/The Truth Is” are my two favorites, while the rest make the album a good background album to have. I have a feeling that the album is better to experience during a live DM concert, or would be better suited as a main soundtrack of a video game. However, in no way do I feel they lost their step with this album. It’s consistently what I would expect with their stylings, and I think with further spins, it will consistently grow in the DM collection.
