Del Marquis – Character Assassination

by Bambi Weavil

Del Marquis (best known as the guitarist for the Scissor Sisters) has released a EP called Character Assassination that could have been released literally in the mid-80s and would have fit right in. The first in the series, the Hothouse EP, was released in December 2008 and Character Assassination showcases another side to Marquis’ talents and offers a greatly different collection of songs from the Hothouse EP.

The album is dark, emotional, psychological and introspective, with “Harmony Park,” “Character Assassination” which focuses on the happiness and despair, and “Untitled” standing out.  “Harmony Park” has a dark torch/tortured quality that I love and really plays to those who love a good psychological standard focusing on the human ego.  “Untitled” with a strong piano structure features special guest Joan Wasser (otherwise known as Joan As Police Woman), which adds to the richness of the song.  Other special guests on Character Assassination include Vula and Sharlene from Basement Jaxx.  The last two songs are more disco-oriented remixes of the originals, “Character Assassination Shadow” and “Raise the Level Shadow” and gives the listener the opportunity to focus more on the lyrics to the strong beat.  I loved this EP which gives Del Marquis opportunities to show his diversity as a recording artist, and I look forward to the entire Del Marquis solo series.
