There is only one Dame Shirley Bassey: the world famous British siren who can still get the party started and then some. Dame Shirley Bassey has sold millions of records worldwide, and spent more weeks in the charts than any other British female recording artist. Now she has released her first album in over a decade on Decca Records, Get the Party Started, celebrates her 70th birthday and combines 13 brilliant songs in a combination of new records and remixed tracks. Don’t be fooled, there’s nothing dated about Dame Shirley Bassey, she is just as contemporary as ever.

“Get The Party Started” kicks off the album and Bassey’s taking on the song made famous by Pink, proves that with her undeniable big voice that she’s still got it. “Big Spender” is a fun re-mix that could easily put her on the top of the charts today. With “I Who Have Nothing” she brings the credentials to tackle such a song that allows Bassey to soar within the remix.

Grace Jones’ classic “Slave To The Rhythm” which is a remixed by The Glimmers, has a tribal jazz dance rhythm yet with Bassey’s unapologetic big voice that gives this song fierce dominance. If you want to pick the diva song, nothing’s more diva than “What Now My Love.” The outstanding new recording besides “Get the Party Started” is called “The Living Tree,” which is the “get the hell out!” song that everyone should listen to. I don’t know how Bassey found “The Living Tree,” but every recording artist should be jealous because this is one fierce song of liberation!

Finally, Bassey tackles “I Will Survive” to dramatic heights, to close out Get the Party Started where Bassey not only works but owns it. This is why Bassey’s a superstar, she can tackle any song, make it ten times bigger, timeless and make it seem utterly effortless.

What a great review and totally justified!!! What a wonderful album from Dame Shirley! Her voice seems to get even better with time! I picked up a copy while on holiday last week, then bought another copy for a friend. Its one of the best pop albums of the decade!!!
