Cyndi Lauper with over 20 years in the music business and global record sales exceeding 25 million, has proven that she has the heart, soul and talent to keep her legion of fans compelled by her innovative, creative moves. Cyndi is the definition of staying power with creative glitter and musical sass.
Bring Ya To The Brink is a savory mix of techno, jazz, rock and a little R&B peppered in. “High and Mighty” like a good shake of Cyndi’s hips, draws you to the dance floor, where you have no idea how good this album is really going to be – but it is. “High and Mighty” like a great dancer, keeps you moving right into”Into the Nightlife” and you can hear the influence of Producer/composer Peer Astrom, who has worked with Madonna and Britney Spears, to keep the instrumental foundation with icy-cool beats, smokey synths and Cyndi’s starkly drawn prose that keeps the sound pumping.
Cyndi works with some incredible talent for this album, including Britain’s Basement Jaxx (famed for dance classics like “Where’s Your Head At?”) and it’s evident in the electro-funk twisting future-hit “Rocking Chair.” “Echo” sounds more like retro-Cyndi with icy-cool beats, and then “Lyfe” happens with Cyndi teaming up with DJ EMZ for a ’70s/Funkadelic-flavored throwdown with R&B/techno flavor that works itself out very nicely to my complete surprise. “Lyfe” examines the struggles of making it through life, as well as reaching for the higher-power that brings us to our collective feet to deal. “Lyfe” proves that Cyndi can really crossover and do anything.
One that makes me jump to my feet is “Same Ol’ Story” – which is going to be a huge hit for Cyndi. Remix it, send it out all over the world, this is what makes Cyndi Lauper timeless, outstandingly brilliant and a fighter for the GLBTQ community and our allies. Cyndi’s personal favorite, “Raging Storm,” looks at the way we all become pre-occupied at the wrong things in life and if we’re lucky, we find our way to the truth of life. The lyrics are deep and on the mark on “Raging Storm”with: “There’s a raging storm / In a troubled sea / But you’re clouding my mind with celebrity / You can fight for the right to be / But ya better not do a bad show on MTV.”
For some house music flavor, Cyndi recorded “Give It Up” with the help of underground U.K. remix-renegades Digital Dog. One of the songs I think that may not be appreciated as it should be is “Set Your Heart,” with Washington-DC based club-maestro Rich Morel, who has remixed Mariah Carey, Nelly Furtado, the Killers and others. “Set Your Heart” could be a surprise hit in the clubs this summer.
The album closes out perfectly with Cyndi’s most elegant and affecting vocal since her classic “Time After Time” with “Rain On Me.” “I still have so much to say and share,” Lauper said recently. “I’m grateful for each and everyday that I get to make music. As long as there’s a corner of the world where people want to hear me, I’ll be there….singing my heart out.”
This is one of Cyndi’s best albums of her career, her timeless poetic lyrics and vibrant threads of dance music elevates everyone else’s artistic work in the music industry today to step it up and deliver as great as Bring Ya To The Brink does. Go see Cyndi on tour this summer for True Colors Tour 2008 (MySpace) where we all want to keep singing along and dancing to Cyndi’s outstanding music.

i do want to hear the rest of this album. so far i’ve only heard one song… i heard it at the club the week before last… and i didnt like it… it was over and over “it’s the same old fucking story” and yah, cyndi, it is, when you keep repeating it! lol. i have ralphi rosario’s dub of it to listen to, and i might like that. still, i do want to hear the rest of the songs, im sure one of them is good!
I was skeptical at first but this makes me want to check it out. I haven’t heard the new joints but “She’s So Unusual” was one of my first cassette tapes as a youngster so I need to show some respect. Regardless, I’m glad to see her staying in the game and continue to be true to herself and “unusual.”
The music is crap and Cindy should have retired 25 years ago. There’s nothing sadder than watching an old lady trying to re-invent herself as a hip and cool rock star. The one thing that gets in the way of her career and that’s her personality.
