Chris Pureka – There’s Nothing Dry about Dryland
by Bambi Weavil
Some of you may not know who Chris Pureka is, but she is one of the biggest guilty pleasures in the indy music scene today. I became familiar with Pureka when my friend insisted in 2006 that I would love her poetic-like lyrics and her heart-felt acoustic music. My friend was right.
Pureka, hailing from Northampton, Massachusetts, has opened for artists such as Pamela Means, Alix Olson and Melissa Ferrick. Pureka’s Dryland is emotional honesty personified in a body of work. It is difficult to pick a favorite over another, each song is truly part of a album, and can’t feel complete without the other songs.
“These Pages” is a incredible inner dialogue of a dialogue between two people that aren’t together and are playing pleasantries with each other through a difficult situation. In “So It Goes” Pureka shows her just how powerful her words can be:
“You’re trying to find a compromise
between remembering and learning to forget,
so now just pouring a glass of water
is like trying to move boulders with your breath.”
Pureka has common themes throughout Dryland with references to home, fire, flight, leaving, love, relationships and marking the moment. I play this record when I’m remembering people that have come and gone and I play this record when I want to hear a damn good songwriter. Pureka’s greatest gifts are her storytelling in a song, where the listener can personify their own experience with her. Pureka’s talent is a delicate and moving art and gift that should not go unrecognized.
