Ariel Aparicio, openly gay singer/songwriter, is unapologetic rock and roll, fun, gorgeous and brilliant. All These Brilliant Things is an epic autobiography of a life spent in the spirit of true rock and roll, and a requiem mass for a lifetime of confusion and chaos now being pulled into focus and set adrift.
In “Life and Times,” Ariel writes about a bipolar Bobby and what it’s like to be with him, with some of my favorite lyrics off the album: “Mystery skins and denizens – he’s Gemini. / Mini me’s and dusty T’s – he’s quite the guy. / Mis-en-Scene and beauty queens, loves Doris Day. / Morning glories, Princeton stories, he never strayed.“
His styling in songs like “New Song”, is almost campy rock, “Bones” is close to the country genre, yet he’s almost to where I want him to be with “I’m The One.” “I’m the One” is almost acoustic yet in a Bryan Adams meets U2 way, reaching across the pop bridge, that I want it even more acoustic. I think Ariel could pull off a Unplugged type album if he wanted. What I love about Ariel is his vulnerability in his lyrics reflected in his voice, and the truth that seems to carry him that makes him so captivating.
I love “Jameson & Cocaine”‘s in-your-face yet scattered rock styling of the after effects of doing drugs and the chains of addiction, that reminds me a great deal of Semi Precious Weapons’ music. Ariel is extremely versitle, when he mixes up the rock/Latino music culture in “Hang Around,” which is an anthem of optimism and perseverance written for his newborn son. I enjoy all the musical interludes he places throughout the album.
I would be extremely interested in seeing him perform live as well as seeing him dive into a poetry anthology – I enjoy his songwriting and would love to see what he could do with a chapbook. Support Ariel’s music by purchasing his album, All These Brilliant Things, at http://cdbaby.com/cd/ariela4.
