Dirty Sexy Money is a prime time drama that premiered in the 2007-08 Television Fall Season. Recently ABC Studios released the first season on DVD. Dirty Sexy Money stars Peter Krause, Donald Sutherland, William Baldwin, Jill Clayburgh, Glenn Fitzgerald, Seth Gabel, Zoe McLellan, Blair Underwood, Natalie Zea and Samaire Armstrong. Due to the WGA Writers’ Strike of 2007, there were only ten episodes shown even though a full season was ordered by ABC. DSM was picked up for a second season, which started on October 1, 2008.
DSM is about a wealthy prominent family in New York called The Darlings. The Darlings’ family tree is as follows: Tripp (Sutherland) and Letitia (Clayburgh) are the patriarchs of the family. Patrick (Baldwin) is the oldest of five children. Karen (Zea) is the oldest of two daughters. Brian, Sr. (Fitzgerald) is the middle son. Jeremy (Gabel) and Juliet are a set of twins with Juliet being a few seconds older.
The premise of the show is that The Darlings’ lawyer, Dutch George is suddenly killed in an airplane crash. It is soon learned that all of the family loved Dutch, except for Brian Sr who thought Dutch was a leech. Tripp talks Nick into taking his father’s place with the family at a charge of $10,000,000 a year to start a charity in Dutch’s name. During the season there are several questions raised:
Was Dutch actually murdered and if so, by whom? What role does Simon Elder play in Dutch’s death, if any? Can Patrick be elected into the Senate? Will he be able to end his relationship with the transsexual, Carmelita? Will Brian Sr accept Brian Jr as his own son? Will Brian Sr’s wife and two daughters return home and accept the new addition to their family? Will Juliet accomplish things on her own? Will Karen ever find true love? Will Jeremy be able to seduce the woman he wants to date at the parking garage or will he continue his pursuit of Nick’s wife, Karen? But most importantly, will Nick be different from his father and not let the lavish lifestyle lure him away from his goals?
DSM is a great show and really does more than entertain. It ultimately asks us to weigh what means most. Money? Fame? Family? No one knows for show and neither do any of the Darlings.
The Complete First Season DVD Collection is a great addition to any collection. In addition to the ten episodes that aired last season, you are loaded with extras. Go behind-the-scenes and look at the set. Is it a real house? Is it a stage? You’ll be shocked to learn some of the design secrets! Watch the bloopers and see the actors crack up laughing as they realize they’ve just made a mistake. Get plenty of episodic commentaries by the writers, directors and actors.
Dirty Sexy Money: The Complete First Season is just as good as the show was in its original airings. There are just two things that make it better: 1. The DVDs are filled with extras to enjoy. and 2. You can enjoy watching “New York’s richest family” whenever you want.
