Photography Project: Wanted Gay and Lesbian Couples and Families

Photography Project: Wanted Gay and Lesbian Couples and Families

Throughout its history, portraiture has been used to memorialize the family lineage and honor family patriarchs and matriarchs; however, these visual depictions have focused almost exclusively on the heterosexual family unit. While, heterosexual families have a pronounced and illustrated legacy, gay families have almost no history of depiction. The final years of the 20th century and early years of the 21st have witnessed a determined challenge to and potential redefinition of the traditional meaning of “family.” The shift has been a source of heated debate: nationally in mainstream media and in federal and state political chambers; locally in churches, synagogues, mosques and schools; and personally between peers, coworkers, around the dinner table, and between parents and children. Given this cultural zeitgeist, this project aims to create a visual record depicting gay and lesbian couples and families and thereby will constructively contribute to the current debate.

for our 5th Annual Queer Women of Color Film Festival

QWOCMAP, the Queer Women of Color Media Arts Project, invites queer women of color film-
makers to submit your satirical, hella funny and thoughtful short films to QWOCMAP’s 5th annual Queer Women of Color Film Festival, to be held at the Brava Theater, San Francisco, June 12-14, 2009.

We know no one can hear us when we talk back to the news, but that doesn’t faze us. We add insightful and irreverent commentary to Rachel Maddow and Keith Olberman. We express our outrage over the crimes against our sister “Jane Doe” in Richmond and Oscar Grant in Oakland. We know about Harvey Milk and we think that everyone should know about Barbara Jordan. And we just know that any one of the
fabulous and funny queer women of color we love would be a better host for the Daily Show.

Whether you’re dealing with marriage equality, environmental justice or corporate jerks, immigration, sovereignty or suckas, we want to see your take on the issues that matter most to you and our communities. PR: Nationwide Support Growing for Gay Representation in Obama’s Inaugural Parade

PR: Nationwide Support Growing for Gay Representation in Obama’s Inaugural Parade

A group in San Francisco has launched www.intheparade.com, a website dedicated to supporting LGBT representation in President-Elect Barack Obama’s 2009 inaugural parade.

The site makes it easy to contact members of the Inaugural Committee and congressional representatives via email to voice support in favor of a gay contingent marching in the 2009 inaugural parade.

“President-Elect Obama’s message of hope was built on equality and unity. Real equality and unity means that the gay community is finally included at the table,” said Paula Grace, co-organizer of intheparade.com. “On January 20th 2009 our President-Elect can demonstrate his sincerity and commitment to the true cause of civil rights in a symbolic way: by including a gay contingent in his parade.”

Hope – commentary by Cyndi Lauper

Hope – commentary by Cyndi Lauper

As I toured all over the country this summer with True Colors, I saw something in the eyes of the audience I have not seen in a very long time, it was HOPE. Each night as I talked about the power of voting, it was evident through their reactions that the crowd wanted to change how this country is run. That is the one good thing that President Bush has done in the past seven years, he has created a movement within the country to change how things are done in Washington DC. But, what mattered to me the most is that everyone cared enough about their own lives and the future to register and vote.
