Sadie – All Natural Me

Sadie – All Natural Me

We recently sat down with the ever-amazing Sadie, creator of AllNaturalMe.com and on etsy! Sadie discusses what inspires her art, her karma kards, why activism is very important to her, environmentalism and more:

Bambi Weavil: What is the art scene like where you’re from? How did you get into making art?

Sadie: The art scene from where I’m from is so minimal, there really isn’t even a scene to get involved in. It’s in pretty sad shape. There are artists, yes – but they are so under-appreciated in our local area. I honestly don’t even consider myself an artist. Of course, that might be because I despise labels of all types so I really wouldn’t put myself into any specific category.

BW: Are the karma cards that you include with each order handmade? What is your story behind the karma cards (we dig the thought…)?

S: Each Karma Kard is completely made by hand. I’ve always had the desire to spread the word about good things like helping the environment, living naturally and being positive. I also like to promote independent artists, small companies and non-profits that work so hard to make change. A collaboration of cards like the Karma Kards brings all these wonderful folks and information together. After I magically connect them together with some handy dandy string, they can easily be shared with others and passed on to friends to help spread the word and good karma!

The Arts Update: Kimberly Davion: At Sea Level

The Arts Update: Kimberly Davion: At Sea Level

Our newly updated section of The Arts, features Kimberly Davion of At Sea Level on Etsy! Here is a excerpt:

(One of our favorite pieces by Kimberly Davion of At Sea Level)

We recently sat down with Kimberly Davion, creator of At Sea Level on etsy! Kimberly discusses her upcoming art, the art scene in Florida, how recycling plays a role in her art, the reason why she donates a portion of her proceeds to the Ocean Conservancy and more:

BW: What drew us to your work is your contribution of 10% of the sales at the end of each month to The Ocean Conservancy – why is The Ocean Conservancy important to you?

KD: The Ocean Conservancy is important to me because I live in a coastal community, of course, just mere minutes from the beach – So I witness on a daily basis of what erosion, pollution and storms can do to the beaches and the wildlife that claim that habitat.

For instance, this year our local area has lost sea turtle hatchlings from all the recent storms. There were 15 nests in our area, so far 3-4 nests made it, several others were washed away by tidal storm surge. I guess I can say I’ve always been a fan of supporting marine wildlife, the Save the Manatees campaign has always been something I was always very passionate about even as a child when I had to do a school report on the endangered species. It was then what made me realize the dangers that these animals face, and sometimes sadly, because of people. Another reason why I love the Ocean Conservancy is that they address these issues of wildlife and more of the other concerns such as creating artificial reefs, By catch, cold water corals, cruise ship waste, entangled animals, invasive species, debris and runoff, overfishing and more, facing our waters. What I like about the OC is that not only do they work on a local level but more importantly a global level, and that makes me more than happy to donate what I can from my sales. I’m hoping in the future that I can achieve more sales (not for profit alone) but mainly because I would like to increase the percentage of what I donate to the Conservancy. I just want to be able to give back as much as I can into the environment that we all share and enjoy for our future generations to have the same bar of quality as we do.

Sophia Wallace photo exhibition – Pink & Bent: May 21-June 28, 2008

Sophia Wallace photo exhibition – Pink & Bent: May 21-June 28, 2008

Sophia Wallace exhibition

May 21–June 28, Leslie/Lohman Gay Art Foundation (LLGAF) presents Pink & Bent, an exhibition of international artwork by queer women. The show presents audiences with a visual experience that depicts the many threads that sew queer women together as a community. Nearly 50 artists are included in Pink & Bent including such notable names as Harmony Hammond, Phranc, Joan E. Brien and Sophia Wallace, hanging alongside lesser-known but no less impressive artists. The art of this exhibit explores topics of masculine/feminine, gender roles, self-identity and self-representation through the depiction of the artists themselves, their friends, lovers and more.

Breaking from her long term documentary, Bois and Dykes Sophia Wallace continues in her exploration of female masculinity in a new series of portraits. This work focuses on the intimacy between photographer and subject. While the subject matter in Sophia’s work remains consistent, this body of work places emphasis on form and aesthetic beauty in portraiture.

Nautical but Nice: Classy, Erotic, Sexy and Philanthropic

Nautical but Nice: Classy, Erotic, Sexy and Philanthropic

Recently, we got to speak with the creator of Nautical but Nice, Captain Sara, for a in-depth interview on her mission of being the premier purveyor of the nautical and aeronautical pin-up and drawing their inspiration from the lovely dames painted on the noses of B-29 airplanes during World War II and the 1950s pin-ups gracing the wooden decks of luxury boats. Classy, erotic, and sassy – we couldn’t resist wanting to find out more about Nautical but Nice which has a unique non-profit goal….

Captain Sara: “My idea was to mesh female sexuality and power in a way that didn’t alienate either gender, and I think there’s a pin-up revolution doing just that. Examples of female sexuality tied in with submission or dominance are rife in the “adult entertainment” world, and I wanted there to be some other images of female sexuality that aren’t tied to any role in particular… other than playfulness (if that’s a role). It’s naughty! And nautical! But nice.”

Sophia Wallace: Strong Connection

Sophia Wallace: Strong Connection

Sophia Wallace: Strong Connection

We discovered the lovely, talented and full-of-heart photographer Sophia Wallace with her project, Bois and Dykes, which examines the concept of ‘feminine masculinity’ by visually telling the stories of people who live within a spectrum of identities ranging from dyke and butch, to tomboy, aggressive, and transgender. Flipping through the photos online, I knew I had to connect with her. Sophia candidly gives us her time and we are blown away with her talent and impact she is making with her photography and her heart.
