Dianne Reeves, the Grammy award-winning premier jazz vocalist who is the only singer to win the vocal category for three consecutive recordings in any singing category, returns with a new album on April 15th on Blue Note Records, When You Know. Reeves mixes up this album with classic standards as well as new material and this is her first since performing the award-winning soundtrack to George Clooney’s 2005 film, Good Night, Good Luck.
Reeves focus on the roads of love, “Just My Imagination,” the signature Motown tune for the Temptations, opens up the album with a new sense of lushness with Reeves’ jazz temperament and vocal optimism. Reeves has compelling magic in her voice as she sweetens “Lovin’ You,” which was Minnie Ripperton’s 1975 hit.
There are some songs that could have been left off this album, for instance, I wasn’t particularly enchanted by “Midnight Sun.” However, “Once I Loved” surprised me, as well as her impassioned, point-on version of “Windmills of Your Mind” in both her bold and light colorful vocals and instrumental focus. “When You Know” could be released as a contemporary single and is one of Reeves strongest vocal, versatile songs, and I could even see her doing a special collaboration with Wynonna Judd if she were willing to bring a pop flavor to it as well.
One of the greatest surprises on this album was the rocking blues closer, “Today Will Be A Good Day,” closing out the album with optimism that she dedicates to her 83-year old mother, who despite health-related issues, is a enthusiast of living life and has inspired Reeves the most.
Dancing, laughing, dreaming and romancing is the perfect way to sum up this fun, loving jazz record from Reeves who never ceases to be one of the trophies in the the hall of jazz for years to come.
