Mississippi LGBT Community Celebrates National Coming Out Day
JACKSON – The fourth annual OUToberfest, a celebration of National Coming Out Day featuring a range of different events, will be held on October 10th through the 12th in Jackson, Mississippi. The annual festival, organized by members of Unity Mississippi, is the only large-scale LGBT event in Mississippi.
“OUToberfest is a time to celebrate diversity, talent, and achievement within our community,” explains Unity Mississippi president Jason Lee. “It is an acknowledgement of the great strides the Mississippi LGBT community, including our friends and families, have made in obtaining civil liberties–and it is a way to educate others about the truths of our community and what is still left to achieve here in Mississippi.”
The schedule of events is as follows:
Friday, October 10th, Julep Restaurant, 7pm to 10pm — OUToberfest kicks off with an All-Ages Social for LGBT individuals, couples, families, and allies.
Saturday, October 11th, Hal & Mal’s, 6pm until — 18+ only. The Main Event features live entertainment from numerous national and regional acts including Eric Himan and the Adams, God-des and She, Josh Duffy, Kelcy Mae, the MissiHIPPY Dancers, Jessica Dunnagan, and Mississippi Drag Entertainment. Hosted by Tanisha Foxx. $15.
Sunday, October 12th, Smith Park, 1pm to 6pm — OUT in the Park is an all-ages event featuring an interfaith service followed by a pet costume contest and live entertainment by local acts.
Sunday, October 12th, J.C.’s, 7pm until — 18+ only. The official closing party of OUToberfest features pool tables, a jukebox, and a casual environment.
The appeal of the festival, which reliably attracts hundreds of attendees from all regions of the country, is not difficult to understand. “OUToberfest provides LGBT Mississippians with the opportunity to be themselves,” Unity Mississippi co-founder Knol Aust explains, “and be part of a positive, affirming experience.”
