Rarely do films make such a impact on me that I would consider classifying a documentary as “required viewing” – A Powerful Noise is one of my most favorite exceptions.

Shelia C. Johnson presents, A Powerful Noise, and the film is directed by Scott Thigpen and Tom Cappello.  This amazing movie focuses on three women in different regions of the world, fighting and empowering others against the fight against AIDS while fighting it themselves, poverty, education and equal rights for women.

Bui My Hanh in Vietnam is living with the HIV virus after her husband infected her with the disease.  Her young daughter died in her arms and her husband died three months later.  The strength she has is mindblowing, as she created the Immortal Flower Group, a support group for those living with AIDS.  The group started with six members and is now over 130.  Hanh’s mission is to help educate men and women to fight the stigma and discrimination against survivors, as well as educate her community about the dangers of HIV.

In Bamako, Mali, Madame Urbain is helping empowering women and children to become educated. Of the 1.3 billion people living in absolute poverty around the globe, 70 percent are women and girls.  Another startling fact is women make up two-thirds of the estimated 876 million adults worldwide who cannot read or write; and girls make up two-thirds of 77 million children not attending school.

“If you educate a woman, you educate a village, and you educate a nation,” Madame Urbain said. Madame Urbain has a organization, APAF, providing girls a basic education, teaching them vocational skills and helps place them in good jobs to earn money.

Nada Markovic in Bosnia, is a survivor of the Bosnia war and working mother of three.  Her women’s association, Maya Kravica, is helping ease hostilities between Serbs and Bosniaks (Muslims) in a region marred by war crimes and massive destruction.  Under Nada’s leadership, the group is reconstructing communities, integrating schools, supporting poor famlies and preventing domestic violence so that the country’s children can have a bright future.  Nada is also empowering women to start a agriculture co-op to offer employment for war widows, and fair trade markets for families to sell their crops and livestock.

Each of these women are important examples of the truth that the film empowers other women and activists to keep fighting, to keep pushing and going because the power of one voice can empower the many.  They each tell their personal stories and how their commitment of their lives is still educate women in their regions.

Make sure you see this movie, it will empower you in all that you do in the global community.  To visit A Powerful Noise’s website and help their partner organizations, please visit www.apowerfulnoise.org.
